Lutherans Concerned and ELM
Yet another confirmation of the wonderful changes occurring in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) was seen yesterday as the Council of the Sierra Pacific Synod met to approve the reinstatement and reception of eight LGBT pastors: the Revs. Paul Brenner, Jeff Johnson, Ross Merkel, Craig Minich, Dawn Roginski, Megan Rohrer, Steve Sabin, and Sharon Stalkfleet. Plans are underway for a service of reception, reinstatement and reconciliation to be held within the Sierra Pacific Synod later this summer.
Although all of these ministers are currently or were previously on the roster of Extraordinary Lutheran Ministries (ELM), each has a unique story to tell about how previous discriminatory policies separated her or him from the official roster of the ELCA. Some were actively serving on the ELCA roster but were later removed; these pastors will return to the roster via the ELCA process referred to as "reinstatement." Others were dropped from the ELCA's candidacy program, finishing their process of discernment, preparation, and credentialing through ELM; they will enter the ELCA roster through a rite of reception. One will be received from the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod.
ELM Executive Director Amalia Vagts said, “This is another important day…. It is wonderful to have leaders like Bishop Mark Holmerud and Bishop’s Associate Nancy Fenuik Nelson and the members of the Sierra Pacific candidacy committee demonstrating holy hospitality to all.”
BIKE BLESSING TODAY
The bikes of Dale Leininger and Sandy Valle be blessed before their 545 mile ride to Los Angeles for the AIDS Lifecycle. See below for more information.
PASTOR DAWN'S FAREWELL
Sunday, June 13, will be Pr. Dawn's last Sunday with us as Pastor of Parish Programs - her three-year call is ending then. She will preach a farewell sermon, and the congregation will have a farewell luncheon immediately after worship (in place of coffee hour).
Luncheon hosts will be our own Lydia Circle members! Please mark your calendars and plan to attend. More details will be announced next week.
The Deaconate has already been meeting with Pr. Paul Brenner for support and guidance - thank you Paul! Pr. Robert will be involved with the ministry of St. Vincent de Paul as needed.
A mailing was sent out this past week requesting gifts to help with the cost of Pr. Dawn’s move. Those interested can return the enclosed envelope to the church office. Checks should be written to St. Francis with “Roginski gift” on the memo line, [rather than directly to Pr. Dawn as was indicated by mail]. Please make your donation by Wednesday, June 9, in order to have it included. Extra envelopes are available on the table in the Narthex. |

WISHES OF GRATITUDE
Dear members and friends of St. Francis: Please accept my deepest gratitude for your support and affirmation across the years I have been part of this remarkable community. Becoming rostered as a “legitimate” pastor with the ELCA is something I could never have anticipated, without all that St. Francis has accomplished. God continue to make you an instrument of healing and hope. Paul Brenner
COUNCIL WILL SET DATE FOR VOTE ON THE ELCA
Now that the Sierra Pacific Synod in Assembly in Reno, NV has voted overwhelmingly to invite St. Francis and First United Lutheran Churches to rejoin the ELCA, dates will be set for information meetings and an official congregational meeting to vote on that issue. Such a vote will allow us to begin the call process. The interim pastor issue will be considered at a later date.
BISHOP'S ASSOCIATE ON LGBT PASTORS
I had the honor of being in a (special) "moment" of life over the course of the last two weeks….I write to express the deep gratitude I felt as I got to listen to 6 ELM (Extraordinary Lutheran Ministries) pastors and two pastors who were removed from the ELCA who were willing to come together and share their stories - about their calls to ministry during a time when the church did not receive them in their fullness and about the ways in which they have been willing and able to offer the Good News with joy and compassion and hospitality. It was an honor to be there. It was a privilege to hear these stories. Pastor Nancy Feniuk Nelson, Assoc. to Bishop, Mark Holmerud, Sierra Pacific Synod.
ANOTHER CENSURE LIFTED
Amalia Vagts, ELM
Bishop Edward Benoway of the Florida-Bahamas Synod has lifted the public censure from Abiding Savior Lutheran Church in Fort Lauderdale. The censure was placed on the congregation in 2002 for having called the Rev. Bill Knott to be its pastor. At the time of his call and installation, he was no longer on the clergy roster of the ELCA, having removed himself earlier because he was living in a committed, same-gender relationship.
