ST. FRANCIS CELEBRATES NEW ELCA LGBTQ POLICIES
Last Sunday, April 18th, members, friends and visitors celebrated both in worship and at coffee hour that the Church Council of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) has approved policies for which St. Francis and First United Lutheran Churches stood for in 1990 and were expelled from the ELCA in 1995.
The ELCA Church Council also welcomed Extraordinary Lutheran Ministry clergy. Such ELM clergy are getting invitations from synod Candidacy Committees to submit their documents so that the process of their joining the ELCA clergy roster can begin.
Your Congregation Council continues to meet with synod officials about St. Francis and the ELCA. Because the trial of 1990 was a joint national and synodical action, while we have the support of the synod, we are trying to determine what the national church expects. One avenue is to petition the ELCA Church Council to rescind the expulsion order since the actions of the 2010 Churchwide Assembly render it moot. Whatever happens the whole congregation will make the final decision.

BISHOPS AT WELCOME’S FREE FARM

Sierra Pacific Synod Bishop Mark Homerud and Episcopal Bishop Marc Andrus examine some seedlings |
On April 17, 2010, ecumenical clergy gathered to bless the all the Free Farm spaces. Even the ELCA synod bishop (Mark Holmerud) and Episcopal bishop (Marc Andrus) were in attendance.
Pr. Dawn was responsible for blessing the gate. Pr. Dan Solberg shared the history of the space and pointed out that some of the bricks from the old St. Paulus Church form the labyrinth. Text for the ritual can be found at http://urbanshare.blogspot.com/2010/04/blessing-of-free-farm-ritual.

WORSHIP PARTICIPANT TRAINING
Crucifer/Torchbearer - May 23, 2010 |
It’s hard to believe that I’m starting the process that will culminate in the AIDS Walk of July 18. But this is the time to begin planning. Equally unbelievable is that I continue to be the self-appointed Team Captain.
As in previous years, in one week, I am going to register everyone from last year’s team. If you cannot do the Walk this year please phone me (415-282-6022) and I will remove your name. I promise to be pleasant about it —or not to be unpleasant.
The Lutheran team members last year raised most of the funds in 2009 and I’m hoping you’ll do it again. And we welcome any newcomers. Here are the team members from 2009:
Cory B., Patrick B., Sylvia B., Paul B., Grant B., Rob B., (what a group of B’s!), Mike C., Richard C., Debbie C., Diane and Jim DeL., Jeannie DeM., Michael D., Greg E., Kathryn G., Robert G., Marcel G., Beverly H., Rachel H., Brad H., Susan H., Marilyn J., Greg J., Robert J., Bruce J., Paul J., Hans-Christian K., Max K., Brian K., Stephen L., Leone L., Dale L., Mitch B., Adam M., Michael M., Brandee M., Carol M., Bill M., Karen O., Anika and Denise O., Gabriel P., Nancy R., Jim R., Robin R., Dawn R., Eric S., Ruth S., David S., Pat S., Carl T., Susan T., Sarah W.., Marsha W.
So, once again, if you can’t do the Walk call me at 415-282-6022. And above all, thanks for all your support year after year after year.
ARCHIE HAS A GAY FRIEND NOW
SF Chronicle, Friday, April 23, 2010
NEW YORK, (AP) --Riverdale High is getting its first gay character. Archie Comics announced Thursday that in an issue out Sept. 1, the long-running comic will introduce its first "openly gay" character, Kevin Keller. The strapping blond will defeat Jughead in a burger eating contest, win the affection of Veronica and wrestle over how to gently rebuff her flirtations. Jon Goldwater, co-CEO of Archie Comics, says the introduction of Kevin is "about keeping the world of Archie Comics current and inclusive."
