COFFEE HOUR after service on November 22 will be at The Friends of St. Francis Childcare Center to honor Gabriel Proo for serving there nine years. Come take advantage of this rare opportunity to see the Childcare Center on a Sunday. Many of you have yet to experience the joy, care, learning and love to be found at Friends of St. Francis. WHAT DO YOU THINK?
The statue of Mary has been loaned to us by Paul Brenner. Since Paul would like to have the statue back, the Worship Committee discussed what to do. They would like your feedback. As an experiment, Pastor Dawn loaned us the statue of Our Lady of Guadalupe for your consideration.
OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE'S STORY
In 1531 a "Lady from Heaven" appeared to a humble Native American ,Jaun Diego, at Tepeyac, a hill northwest of what is now Mexico City. She identified herself as the virgin Mary. She made a request for a church to be built on the site, and submitted her wish to the local Bishop. When the Bishop hesitated, and requested her for a sign, the Mother of God obeyed the Church's local Bishop, and sent her native messenger to the top of the hill in mid-December to gather an assortment of roses for the Bishop.
After complying to the Bishop's request for a sign, She also left for us an image of herself imprinted miraculously on the native's tilma, a poor quality cactus-cloth, which should have deteriorated in 20 years but shows no sign of decay 477 years later. |

ENDOWMENT DINNER CELEBRATES ITS DONORS AND RECIPIENTS
The St. Francis Endowment Committee (formerly the Foundation Committee) held a dinner at One Market Restaurant last Wednesday evening with members and friends of St. Francis Church.
Jim Kowalski, chair of the Endowment Committee emceed the event. The evening started with a reception which included wine and appetizers.
Following a wonderful dinner prepared by One Market Restaurant, the program continued with a talk by Max Kirkeberg, stating his intention to include the Endowment fund as a recipient in his estate plan.
Caitlyn Ryan, Director of Family Acceptance Project, San Francisco State University, (pictured below) which organization received a grant from the St. Francis Lutheran Church Endowment Fund, made a presentation. The endowment grant from St. Francis enabled the Family Acceptance Project to produce a booklet given to families with LGBT children. Caitlyn also showed a moving video recounting one family’s acceptance of their gay son was also shown.
For 2009-2010, the Endowment Committee is launching the “Luther List”, named for Jim Luther, who died in 1995, and left a six-figure bequest to St. Francis. The Luther List is composed of members and friends who will be including the St. Francis Lutheran Church Endowment as a beneficiary of their estate plans.
The St. Francis Endowment is a ministry through which members and friends can continue their contribution to the ministry of this congregation and its mission to the community and to the world. Started as the St. Francis Foundation in 1982, the endowment fund is the repository of bequests received from wills and life insurance. Only income earned from the investment of these bequests are distributed to grant applicants. Grants are given by recommendation of the Endowment Committee and approval of the Church Council.
Current members on the Endowment Committee are Jim Kowalski, Chair, Brian Border, Deb Côté, Jim DeLange, Susan Kooks, Rob Byrne, and Bill Baird, outside board member. Inquiries may be made to the committee or a pastor.

HOSPITALITY HOUR UPDATE
Yes, it’s an update now, rather than “Hospitality Hour in Peril” notice. So does this mean we’ve found two more early morning Sunday volunteers to greet our Hospitality Hour guests? No—we’re still short. But over the month of October we have had enough drop-in volunteers that we’re managing.
Does that mean we are not looking for two more persons to commit to one Sunday a month? Of course not. For serenity’s sake, we do need that commitment.
Will you please consider helping us?In the meantime, Max will be asking “known supporters” for that commitment.
