WE REMEMBER IN PRAYER: |
Hotel workers are very important to the life of San Francisco's world-class tourism industry. Management at the HEI Le Meridien and Hyatt Fisherman’s Wharf hotels have refused to honor their workers’ petition for a fair process to choose a voice on the job.
Many in our community, including elected officials and religious leaders have expressed support for the worker-called boycott of these hotels. We also want to highlight how many of our community's concerns are all inter-connected in the struggle for justice and equality. Rather than hold a banquet inside these establishments, we took our celebration to the streets on July 26th. There was well over 200 people in attendance at this joyful event.
People were asked to sign a statement in support of the boycott on a large foam board. When it was presented to management, she refused to take it.
The interfaith invocation was led by (L to R) Pastor Eric Gabourel, Rabbi Ruth Adar, Imam Khaled Hamoui, and Buddhist Rev. Jana Drakka.

Though we had 100 registered walkers, we had only 35 walkers in the park, probably 15 or so less than last year. Of these 35, only 6 were from the geography department. Our preliminary total gives us $30,185 (compared to $29,530 last year). We have until August 14 to collect checks, so I’m urging everyone to continue to be alert and collect more if possible.
Our final total last year was $43,204, so I am hoping we can collect about $15,00 more this year.
Thanks to everyone who participated, with special thanks to Clifton King for making coffee, Carl Tebell for preparing and serving us lunch, Timur Muhrlin and Lawrence Mortensen for transporting food and supplies to the park, to the Klings for storing our placards, and to Pastor Dawn for tabulating team totals.
