WASHINGTON (AP) — An ordinance recognizing same-sex marriages performed in other states and countries went into effect Tuesday in the District of Columbia, and a member of the City Council said he planned to follow up with a measure to allow same-sex marriage in the city.
The bill recognizing the marriages was approved 12 to 1 by the City Council in May. Congress, which has the final say over the city’s laws, had 30 days to review the legislation. Since it took no action, the bill automatically became law.
Councilman David Catania is fine-tuning a bill that would allow same-sex marriages to be performed in Washington.
During the Congressional review period, some opponents of the Washington ordinance sought a referendum on the matter. The effort was spearheaded by Bishop Harry Jackson, who leads a church in Beltsville, Md.

Woe, woe, woe. We got problems. The couple that previously told me they would have the after-walk barbeque have now informed me that they will not be able to do it. Our budget for the Walk expenses is limited to $150.00. Box lunches cost $9.00 from the AIDS-Walk caterers (9 x 50 = $450). It’s possible we won’t have a post-walk lunch. Unfortunate, but not the end of the world.
A week ago, our on-line team total was $7,425. It is now $9,560. Of 100 team members, four geographers have raised $3,340 and 13 Lutherans have raised $4,085. But that leaves 83 team members with no on-line donations. I hope that means checks and cash rather than “I’ll get to it tomorrow.”
Ten days left to the Walk.

BOSTON — The Massachusetts attorney general, Martha Coakley, sued the federal government Wednesday to overturn a section of the law denying federal benefits to spouses in same-sex marriages.
With the suit, Massachusetts becomes the first state to challenge the Defense of Marriage Act, which was passed by Congress in 1996 and prohibits the federal government from recognizing same-sex marriage. Massachusetts was also the first state, in 2003, to grant gay couples the right to marry.
Lutheran True Confessions
Illustrating the cost that the ELCA is going to pay for approving the ordination of LGBTQ pastors in committed relationships at the Churchwide Assembly in Minneapolis this August, Community Church of Joy in Glendale, Arizona, an ELCA mega congregation with weekly attendance at approximately 2500, voted on June 28 to sever its relationship with the ELCA and join Lutheran Congregations in Mission for Christ.
Megapastor Walt Kallestad says his church "will not accept or comply with any such denominational decision....I would say to you that we’re going to do everything we can to pray and seek God that this would not prevail, that the vote of the acceptance of leadership and the ordination of gays and lesbian pastors, I believe, would break God’s heart, it would break many people’s hearts. But at the end of the day, should they choose to do that, we’ll ask God what do you want us to do at that point?”
The SF Marathon will be running through San Francisco Sunday July 26 from west to east SF, starting early in the morning. The route will go east on Haight St. to Buchanan, then to Guerrero. The marathon is expected to affect the traffic in the church’s area at least through 11:30 A.M.
