Reflecting the ecumenical advances between the ELCA Lutherans and Episcopalians, a joint Eucharist was held before the Pride Parade began. In the picture above, the Bishop of the Sierra Pacific Synod ELCA, Mark Holmerud, raises the Eucharistic cup as the Epicopal Bishop of (Northern) California, Marc Andrus, stands behind him.
The two church contingents marched separately. Bishop Holmerud and Asst. to the Bishop, Nancy Feniuk Nelson and their spouses led the Lutheran contingent waving to the crowds from Richard Copperud’s red convertible driven by Chris Buchanan. We have also learned that the congregation in Davis that Bishop Holmerud served before becoming bishop has invited ELM candidates to apply for his former position as pastor.

From the Facebook Page: "We must do everything in our power to enlist our straight allies, family members, co-workers to march side by side with us on October 11 for the National Equality March on Washington." If you are Straight, if you are LGBT, COME OUT to March on Washington this October, to demand equal protection under the law for EVERYONE!

I have great news. I was fearful that Tajia and Michael from the SFSU Geography Department had decided not to host their post walk BBQ. But I heard from them, and they will do it again. Yea, yea, yea.
The news from the team is both good and worrisome. A week ago, 8 Lutherans had raised $3,465 on-line. Today, July 1st, 9 Lutherans have raised $4,450 (and the Team total has gone from $5,640 to $7,425).
What's worrisome? Almost all the increase has come from the same 8 people from last week. Patrick, who made star walker several weeks ago, got another $75. Anika and Cary are closing in on Star Walker status. Stephan, Gabriel, Michael and Max all had additions to their total. But 51 Lutherans have not been heard from in terms of on-line donatons.
Incidently, everyone on our team has a webpage, so you can tell potential sponsors they can donate to you on-line. Long onto www. aidswalk.net, click on San Francisco, click on Sponsor a Walker. Then type in the walker's (your) name.
As for Little Maxie, I have sent out 105 letters to out-of twoners, and plan this week to send 100 letters locally. then I wait. In the meantime, I have on-line donatinos of $550 including 3 from St Francis. Thanks to Tom, Ken, Jim, Jack and Babs. Max
To sponsor a walker, talk to one of the walkers on our St. Francis team. You can also sponsor a walker directly on-line by going to http://www.aidswalk.net/sanfran/, and click on the button on the left button that says Sponsor a Walker.
To find out who is on the St. Francis team, click on the left button of the homepage that says Team Info. On the following page, look for the link 2009 Registered Teams, and scan down for the team St Francis Lutheran Church/SFSUGeography-1127.
On Thursday, September 10, the All San Francisco Concert Committee will sponsor a concert for the whole community at Davies Symphony Hall. The Concert recreates the Opening Night concert program with Michael Tilson Thomas and pianist Ilya Yakushev:
We will need a minimum of 10 tickets at $10 each paid in advance no later than Sunday, July 26. Let’s go together and enjoy that special evening! First 10 people to sign up will enjoy a light dinner at Pastor Robert's Condo 3 blocks from the Symphony Hall. See Sam Aller.
New York Times, July 2, 2009
NEW DELHI —In a landmark ruling Thursday that could usher in an era of greater freedom for gay men and lesbians in India, New Delhi’s highest court decriminalized homosexuality.
“The inclusiveness that Indian society traditionally displayed, literally in every aspect of life, is manifest in recognizing a role in society for everyone,” judges of the Delhi High Court wrote in a 105-page decision, India’s first to directly address rights for gay men and lesbians. “Those perceived by the majority as ‘deviants’ or ‘different’ are not on that score excluded or ostracized,” the decision said.
Homosexuality has been illegal in India since 1861, when British rulers codified a law prohibiting “carnal intercourse against the order of nature with any man, woman or animal.” The law, known as Section 377 of India’s penal code, has long been viewed as an archaic holdover from colonialism by its detractors.
