WE REMEMBER IN PRAYER: |
The California Supreme Court has announced that it will issue an opinion in three cases challenging the constitutionality of Proposition 8 at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, May 26, 2009. (Strauss v. Horton, S168047; Tyler v. State of California, S168066; City and County of San Francisco v. Horton, S168078.)
Our recent vision document calls for the establishment of a deaconate program at St. Francis. This program will allow members of the congregation to not only receive recognition for their gifts but also find opportunity to use these gifts for the good of the congregation and increase those same gifts through training and practical application. We welcomed members into the deaconate program recently with the signing of the senses. The liturgical deacons have completed their training and will be commissioned on June 14, 2009. Please plan to attend this service and welcome Grant Burger, Bruce Jervis and Paul Johnson into this important ministry of our congregation.
Our hospitality hour, now in its 10th year, is a wonderful success in providing a fine meal in a welcoming atmosphere for up to 60 people. Thanks to the recent addition of the Food Runners program, the meals have become more varied, have more quality and are delicious thanks to our wonderful chef Carl Tebell.
But our notice that we need help (especially with clean-up from 9:00-9:45) have not produced any new St. Francis volunteers. Then it occurred to us: the system we developed for volunteers for our Saturday food deliveries is working spectacularly. People commit to work one Saturday per month. Perhaps this can work on Sundays as well. So we ask, can you see yourself volunteering one Sunday a month for the short period of time between 9 and 9:45 AM? As with the Saturday food deliveries, Max will phone those who sign up a day or two before their Sunday to remind them.
Come and join us in the good work we do! Please consider this and then phone Max at 282-6022. We need 2 people per Sunday to help with clean-up so that the regular volunteers can stay in a blessed mood for church. Don’t worry, you won’t have to the clean toilet - Max does that.
Note: We will not have a meal on the May 31st because Carl, Max and Chuck will be in LA, China and the Amazon.

Have you noticed that the faces of St. Francis on the main Parish Hall bulletin board have been culled, added to, and painfully alphabetized? Well, they have. (What does this have to do with the AIDS Walk? A bit.)
There are lots of faces there. Good looking and really fit faces (go look and see for yourself.) I will be studying those faces to find potential new walkers. There are also a lot of new faces -reflecting a dozen or so new members and prime targets for my quest to grow the team.
The new members and, perhaps, some forgetful members of long standing (note how tasteful I was not to call them old members) may have forgotten why we walk and something of the process of joining the team. So let me recap.
We walk because thousands of people in our neighborhood and city died of AIDS; because scores of St. Francis Lutheran members died of AIDS; and because many of our current members are living with HIV. All of us - everyone of us - has lost friends and lovers. We walk and raise money because it is something that we can do.
The process is easy: sign up with Max, write a short note about the what and why of the Walk, and then send it to all your friends and relatives. Then - if your fitness and schedule permits - you can join us at Golden Gate Park on Sunday July 19th for a party of celebration. You can even raise money if you can’t do July 19th.
Questions? Ask Max, or Grant Burger or Sylvia Braselmann, or Beverly, or Deb Coté, or Carl Tebell, or Jim and Diane DeLange. Or just about every other St. Francis member.
I will be leaving for China on May 31st, so it would be better to sign up with Max before he leaves. Next best—sign up after he returns on the 14th of June.
Below, is the new free ad for the AIDS Walk booklet sent to all participants.
