HELP! HELP! HELP!

Yes, yes, yes. You’ve read this notice before. The problem is that our problem (we need volunteers) hasn’t gone away. No one has volunteered. So the notice goes on.

Hospitality Hour, a program of the St. Vincent dePaul Committee offered on Sunday mornings, has lost two of our long-time client-volunteers. We need help, especially with clean-up. While the rest of us get to church at 7 AM, you (who volunteer) won’t have to be here until 9 AM, and should be finished in time for the Adult Forum at 9:45 AM. If we don’t get help, Max, Chuck, and Carl are likely to be surly and (even more) unpleasant. Please contact one of these three persons if you can help or need more information.

GAY EX-ARCHBISHOP SPEAKS OUT

Rembet Weakland

New York Times, May 14, 2009

In the spring of 2002 the long career of Archbishop Rembert G. Weakland of Milwaukee, one of the church’s most venerable voices for change, went up in flames one May morning. There, on ABC’s “Good Morning America,” the archbishop watched a man he had fallen in love with 23 years earlier say that the Milwaukee archdiocese paid him $450,000 years before to keep quiet about his affair with the archbishop — an affair the man was now calling date rape. The next day, the Vatican accepted Archbishop Weakland’s retirement.

“If we say our God is an all-loving god,” he said, “how do you explain that at any given time probably 400 million living on the planet at one time would be gay? Are the religions of the world, as does Catholicism, saying to those hundreds of millions of people, you have to pass your whole life without any physical, genital expression of that love?” rchbishop Weakland, 82, said he was probably the first bishop to come out of the closet voluntarily. He said he was doing so not to excuse his actions, but to give an honest account of why it happened, and to raise questions about the church’s teaching that homosexuality is “objectively disordered. Those are bad words because they are pejorative,” he said.

AIDS WALK NOTICE #3

Not much happening that I know of. We did get a new Walker. Kathryn Gilje is new to St. Francis but when I asked if she would join the team, she replied enthusiastically “You bet!” (Kathryn, I know it wasn’t exactly like this but don’t you agree, this sounds good?) So let her response be an inspiration to the 12 or so of you on my list to ask. And no more skipping coffee hour: this is my prime asking venue. Max
