HELP! HELP! HELP!

Yes, yes, yes. You’ve read this notice twice now. The problem is that our problem (we need volunteers) hasn’t gone away. No one has volunteered. So the notice goes on.

Hospitality Hour, a program of the St. Vincent dePaul Committee offered on Sunday mornings, has lost two of our long-time client-volunteers. We need help, especially with clean-up. While the rest of us get to church at 7 AM, you (who volunteer) won’t have to be here until 9 AM, and should be finished in time for the Adult Forum at 9:45 AM. If we don’t get help, Max, Chuck, and Carl are likely to be surly and (even more) unpleasant. Please contact one of these three persons if you can help or need more information.

AIDS WALK NOTICE #2

Great News. Not a single team member has contacted me to say they can’t “do” it this year. Mind you, cynics will offer the explanation that the notice was not read. Surely this cannot be the case.

More great news. Bill Mooney, Brandee Marckmann and Adam Maass have joined the team. They are now my heroes. Anymore out there? See me Sunday or phone at 282-6022. Max

MAINE APPROVES MARRIAGE EQUALITY

San Francisco Chronicle

Maine's governor signed a bill Wednesday approving gay marriage, making it the fifth state to approve the practice and moving New England closer to allowing it throughout the region. New Hampshire legislators were also poised to send a gay marriage bill to their governor, who hasn't indicated whether he'll sign it. If he does, Rhode Island would be the region's sole holdout.

The Maine Senate voted 21-13, with one absent, for a bill that authorizes marriage between any two people rather than between one man and one woman, as state law currently allows. The House had passed the bill Tuesday.

Democratic Gov. John Baldacci, who hadn't previously indicated how he would handle the bill, signed it shortly afterward. In the past, he said he opposed gay marriage but supported civil unions, which provide many benefits of marriage.

CALIFORNIA SUPREME COURT DECISION DAY

The California Supreme Court is expected to rule on whether Prop 8 will stand before June 5. On the day of decision there will be gatherings across the state. Here is the information about our local gatherings for Decision Day:

WASHINGTON DC ON BOARD

Washington Post

The D.C. Council overwhelmingly approved a bill yesterday (May 5th) to recognize same-sex marriages performed elsewhere. Mayor Adrian M. Fenty has said he will sign the bill recognizing same-sex marriages performed elsewhere. The council's action goes before Congress, which under the Home Rule Charter has 30 days to review District legislation. The bill could present the House and Senate with their biggest test on the same-sex marriage issue since Congress approved the Defense of Marriage Act in 1996.

HARVEY MILK DAY?

San Francisco Chronicle

A CA state Senate committee has approved legislation designating May 22 honoring slain gay rights leader Harvey Milk. The bill would require the governor to designate Milk's birthday as Harvey Milk Day. It would be a "day of special significance" recognizing Milk's life and his contributions to the state but would not be a holiday, meaning there would be no cost to the state.
