MIXED NEWS ON EQUALITY
About 10 days ago the North Dakota House of Representatives voted down S.B. 2278, a bill to prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation in housing and employment.
Gov. David Paterson of New York announced on Thursday that he would introduce a bill to legalize same-sex marriage.
Currently the measure does not have enough support in the State Senate, which Democrats seized last fall and control by a thin margin, 32 to 30. A number of Democrats have expressed reservations about legalizing marriages of gay and lesbian couples, but advocates of same-sex marriage have urged politicians to have a public debate and place themselves on the record.

MORE PICTURES FROM ISRAEL

A young Jewish Orthodox disciple praying at the corner of the Western Wall in a T-shirt with English
Business mottos. If he were Ultra-Orthodox he would have been dressed in a black suit and with long curly sideburns.
Women have won the right to pray at the Western Wall in a separate section. Some are working to end the segregation at the Wall.
Israel has a young population and the Orthodox represent 20% . At the founding of the nation in 1948 the Orthodox were given all religious authority to conduct all weddings and all divorces. The majority of the population is secular who, if they were religious, say they would be Orthodox. But there are movements in society and in the courts to end the Orthodox
monopoly. |
 |
The TV news cameras were recording the annual cleaning of the Western Wall of the many millions of prayers in preparation for Passover. |
 |
Prayers are inserted in the cracks between the giant stones of the Wall. |
 |
When Israel was attacked in 1967 by three nations on three fronts it won the war and East Jerusalem. The huge Temple Mount that Herod of the Bible built was included and at its Western Wall Jews could pray once again. Israel left the administration of the Islamic mosques with the Arab population. In this photo note that at center right there is a TV crew.

JEWISH COMMUNITY RELATIONS COUNCIL AND INTERFAITH PARTNERS |
To Recruit Volunteers to Confront Poverty at April 29th Event
Contact: Linda Frank, co-chair 415-263-8926; Linda@franknet.net |
| Lend a Hand, Share a Skill, Lift a Spirit is the theme of an interfaith volunteer recruitment “fair” scheduled for Wednesday, April 29, from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m., at the Jewish Community Center of San Francisco, 3200 California Street. The event will match volunteers’ interests and skills to tasks offered by participating nonprofit agencies.
Co-sponsors includes the Jewish Community Center, Jewish Family & Children’s Service, Temple Emanu-El and Episcopal Charities. These and other agencies will also “exhibit” their volunteer offerings. JCRC plans to implement a simple matching system that will steer potential volunteers to appropriate agencies, making the recruitment event an efficient use of both attendees’ and exhibitors’ time.
New and gently used children’s books will also be collected by the Jewish Coalition for Literacy, a tutoring program in public schools. Collection barrels for non-perishable food and personal hygiene items to be donated to the San Francisco Food Bank and San Francisco Connect, respectively, will also be available. The event is free for volunteers and agencies.
