PERTH, W. AUSSIE GREETINGS

Ben Sloan & Chung Bae

We received the following email from Ben and Chung from Perth: All is well down under. Our household goods finally arrived last month so we finally feel settled. Perth is wet in the winter, but usually via rolling thunder-storms with intermittent sunshine, so fabulous rainbows are a daily occurrence.

Finding a church has been an adventure. Do you all know how good you have it at St. Francis?

Most of the places we tried, both Anglican and Lutheran, held bizarre services reminiscent of the 1970s in suburban America. The Anglican church two blocks from our house was friendly, and had just had a split with the minister over ordination of women (remember what I said about the time warp?)...

We eventually landed on St. George's Anglican, downtown Perth. It's a fabulous cathedral with a strong congregation, wonderful boys choir, spectacular pipe organ, and even a printed program with a service very similar to St. Francis'. Our only complaint is the climate inside during the winter months which is positively frigid. See http://www.perthcathedral.org.

We miss the church and the bay area! Hello to everyone! Ben Sloan and Chung Bae

HOME OF FAMILY OF FRIENDS OF ST. FRANCIS CHILDCARE CENTER RANSACKED

One of the center’s hard-working families returned home Monday, July 28th to find their apartment torn apart, their dog cowering under a bed, and everything of value stolen. Items that had been major investments to this family were gone—a digital camera, Dell computer, the boy’s Playstation and Xbox were gone. And many personal items were missing.

Gabriel, aged 9 and his brother aged 7 were afraid to go to bed. Their mother told me she knows the most important thing is they are all safe.

When bad things happen to good people, small gestures of kindness can make a big difference. If anyone has an idea about helping out, please contact me at the Childcare Center.

BULLETIN #10

August 6, 2008

We’re back from our trip to Oregon with Bailey. We mostly stayed with friend and thanks to remarkably good behavior by all 3 of us, they are still our friends.

My report on how we’re doing in our fundraising is going to be a bit vague because I haven’t yet received any information from AWSF on how individuals have done. They tell me I should get it by Friday. (In years past, I would get it a week after the walk.) So all I have to go on are the on-line team roster for 8/6 and whatever you have told me you have raised since the walk.

First, the on-line changes: On 7/19, our total $15,211. Today this total is $17,871, a gain of $2,660. In addition, I’ve heard from Grant Burger, Richard Copperud, and Greg Jahnke. They report an increase of $920. So right here we can safely add about $4,000 to the $29, 718 total on 7/20.

More worrisome are the 26 Lutheran on our team who so far have raised nothing on-line and were not at the walk. 5 of these are former star-walkers! So in the coming week I will be contacting the 26 to find out where they stand. Hopefully I will hear good news from most of those super nice and generous folk.

Finally- and here I have statistics that I control– my own totals are continuing to rise. On July 23rd (AW notice #9) I had heard from 93 friends who had raised $8117. As of yesterday, I’ve heard from 135 friends who have raised $10,414. And I still haven’t heard from 38 local folks and 50 national friends, who last year wrote checks to the total of $4435. So I’m hopeful that by the 15th I will be pretty close to what I raised last year. I truly hope we all can continue to receive support for this cause.
