CANADIAN BISHOP CENSURES HOLY CROSS CHURCH
|
 |
n May, Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Newmarket, Ontario, ordained Lionel Ketola, an openly gay person. At their Synod’s assembly this month, Bishop Michael Pryse publicly censured the congregation. To Holy Cross Church, the censure was not unexpected.
However, in a surprise development, the synod assembly also passed resolutions that encourage the bishop and synod council to exercise restraint in disciplining pastors and congregations who in good conscience call pastors like Lionel Ketola.
Bishop Pryse also announced that due to his role as Bishop of that synod and the required procedures, he was “obliged to convene and an investigative Committee to advise the synod council at its November 2008 meeting if further discipline was called for in this violation of church policy…”
|
  |
The Bishop also stated: “the synod council could, upon the committee's recommendation, suspend or exclude Holy Cross from the ELCIC.” And, in light of the rules, the Bishop announced that "neither the ELCIC nor any of our Full Communion partners will recognize the validity of this irregular rite and Mr. Ketola is not recognized as being a rostered minister of this church." The next step will be the appointment of the Investigative Committee to make recommendations to the synod council about whether further discipline is called for in this situation.
Also at the synod assembly, the Treasurer thanked Holy Cross Lutheran Church, a congregation of 280 members, for their gift of $27,000 which helped to bridge a gap in the synod budget.

CONGRATULATIONS JEANNINE! |
 |
Our own Jeannine Janson was given a special award at Hearts on Fire. Lutherans Concerned recognizes the valuable contribution Jeannine has made to them in time and money over the last 6 years on the national board. She has been a steady, capable leader and helped propel Lutherans Concerned forward towards their new mission. The distinguished service award is named the Janson Distinguished Service Award in her honor. An endowment fund was also established in her name. We all know how hard-working and valuable Jeannine is and now all her service to Lutherans Concerned has been formally recognized.
Pictures from the event and more details will be in future issues of The Times.

Worship Committee Meeting Moved to
July 29th at 7 PM |
 | BULLETIN #8 July 16, 2008 |
Since I last wrote this, on July 9th, lots has happened—and all of it good. A couple more walkers have joined us and the amount we have raised on-line has grown from $5705 (July 9) to $11,981 today. See—I told; you I wasn’t discouraged. Even so, most geographers and most Lutherans as of today have raised no funds on-line (16 geographers have raised $7,268.50 and 10 Lutherans have raised $4,712.50). I suspect that will change for the good.
My own track record has also improved, and a week ago I had only mailed 37 folks. As of today, I have sent out 118 letters to Bay Area folks, and 108 letters to friends around the country. As of today, I have received checks from 38 persons and on-line donations from 8 persons, for a total of $3,186 (compared to $1,366 a week ago.)
So—walkers—we’ll see you in Golden Gate Park on the 20th. Keep asking for support. We’ll do fine again.

YOUR PASTORS CARE
If you would like one of your pastors to listen to your concerns or pain, don't hesitate to ask us -make an appointment, or ask us to call you or mark the pew card. We can be distracted at times on Sundays, so it is best to set aside another time when we can really listen. Pastors Robert and Dawn
