Laying on Hands Lional Ketola ordination

LIONEL KETOLA ORDAINED

The Rev. Lionel Ketola, the first gay married pastor in Canada, was ordained extraordinarily at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Newmarket, Ontario. Pr Ketola was called by Newmarket Ontario, Holy Cross Luther-an Church to serve as an Ambassador of Reconciliation in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada (ELCIC), to further the work of full inclusion. in the ELCIC.

Lionel began his candidacy process with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada (ELCIC) in 1985. After coming out to his bishop in 1986 Lionel’s internship site was cancelled and he faced the prospect of being dropped from the master of divinity program at the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Saskatoon. While Lionel was eventually allowed to finish his degree, his progress towards approval for ordination was halted.

In 2005 Lionel approached Holy Cross Lutheran Church just north of Toronto, Ontario. In the process of consideration, the congregation realized its commitment to justice extended beyond Lionel’s internship. Their grant application to ELM stated: "The Council of Holy Cross sees our congregation’s efforts as a witness to the ELCIC as well as to the communities in which we serve. It is our hope that Lionel’s internship at Holy Cross will mark the beginning of a Canadian ELM."

Lionel lives with his spouse, Steven Loweth, a 41-year-old music publisher. They were married New Year’s Eve 2003. They make their home in York Region north of Toronto. St. Francis contributed to Lionel’s seminary internship last weekend. See www.elm.org and www.lutheranconfessions.com for more information.

ORGAN REDEDICATION

The Organ Renovation Task Force would first like to thank David Schofield and the Choir for the spectacular dedication service. We would also like to thank those that made a special contribution for the unexpected repair to the Organ.

Additional donations are still needed to cover the repair. If you are able to give $5, $10, $25 or even a $100, it would be much appreciated. Please mark the envelope, "Organ Fund". Thank you. Ken Hedrick

Hearts on Fire Conference

Registration Deadline is June 1st

Hearts on Fire logo

Lutherans Concerned/North America invites people of all sexual orientations and gender identities to assemble with members of Reconciling in Christ and prospective RIC congregations at San Francisco State University July 3-6 under the theme, Hearts on Fire.

We’ll worship together, using a rich variety of traditions of the worshipping community. We’ll provide a blend of the familiar and the unique drawing on our Lutheran heritage and the wealth of liturgical practice in the area. We’ll network with one another, hear stories of joy and frustration, and make decisions together about the future direction of Lutherans Concerned/North America.

Hearts on Fire. is more than a conference. We take pride in nurturing our participants. Many see the biennial assembly as a family reunion. In 2008, we hope to expand that family feeling by offering some new and exciting aspects to the assembly. Assembly Pre-Events offer extra education and edification before the assembly begins. Vacation Bible School will be offered for children of Assembly attendees and local RIC congregations. This will allow children to have a meaningful Assembly experience along with parents. Keynote Speakers include the Rt. Rev. Gene Robinson, Episcopal Bishop of New Hampshire.

Information and Registration are at http://www.lcna.org/assembly/ This event is right in our backyard. We have been asked to provide many volunteers -the more the merrier. If you able to assist to any degree, please talk to the pastors. We also need to consider whether St. Francis will be a hospitality center because we are on the Muni line that goes to and from San Francisco State. Many attendees could stop at St. Francis as their beginning point for visiting the Castro community.

Pastor Lura Groen

ANOTHER ORDINATION IN JULY
A FIRST FOR TEXAS

ELM Roster member Lura Groen has been called by Grace Lutheran Church in Houston, Texas. The extraordinary ordination will take place on Saturday July 26th at 2pm, at Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, with a reception following at the church.

A WORD OF EXPLANATION

If you are visiting St. Francis you need to know that because the official Lutheran national Churches require only LGBTQ candidates for ministry to sign a vow of celibacy (not heterosexuals), a growing number of candidates are refusing to sign this unjust rule. Extraordinary Lutheran Ministries (ELM) is the means by which congregations call these courageous clergy.

NEW RIC WELCOMING SYNOD IN CANADA

Lutherans Concerned/North America (LC/NA) celebrates the passage of two welcoming motions by the British Columbia Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada (ELCIC). These motions qualify the British Columbia Synod to be listed by LC/NA in our roster of Reconciling in Christ (RIC) settings of the Lutheran communion. The roster now includes 26 synods, including the Eastern Synod and British Columbia Synod of the ELCIC.

The motions which follow were passed during the British Columbia Synod Convention, April 16-20.

YOUR PASTORS CARE

If you would like one of your pastors to listen to your concerns or pain, don't hesitate to ask us -make an appointment, or ask us to call you or mark the pew card. We can be distracted at times on Sundays, so it is best to set aside another time when we can really listen. Pastors Robert and Dawn
