CA SUPREME C0URT ENDS
LGBT MARRIAGE BAN

The California Supreme Court ruled Thursday that it is against the constitution of the State of California to deny same-gender couples the right to marry. The landmark decision will become effective in 30 days unless it is delayed by court order. The court said: "In contrast to earlier times, our state now recognizes that an individual's capacity to establish a loving and long-term committed relationship with another person and responsibly to care for and raise children does not depend upon the individual's sexual orientation...

"An individual's sexual orientation -- like a person's race or gender -- does not constitute a legitimate basis upon which to deny or withhold legal rights." "In view of the substance and significance of the fundamental right to form a family relationship, the California Constitution properly must be interpreted to guarantee this basic civil right to all Californians, whether gay or heterosexual, and to same-sex couples as well as to opposite-sex couples."

PASTOR MEGHAN ROHRER TO PREACH TODAY

Because Pastor Rohrer has been called by four congregations of San Francisco to minister to the homeless, she preaches at each four times a year. We welcome her to our pulpit this morning.

PR. OBERHOLZER TO TO SPEACK AT WORSHIP

The Rev. Pieter Oberholzer, our missionary to South Africa, will be at St. Francis today, and will speak during the service. Pastor Oberholzer has been leading a courageous ministry for the LGBTQ populations in church and society in and beyond South Africa.

ORGAN REDEDICATION

The Organ Renovation Task Force would first like to thank David Schofield and the Choir for the spectacular dedication service. We would also like to thank those that made a special contribution for the unexpected repair to the Organ.

Additional donations are still needed to cover the repair. If you are able to give $5, $10, $25 or even a $100, it would be much appreciated. Please mark the envelope, "Organ Fund". Thank you. Ken Hedrick

Hearts on Fire Conference
Hearts on Fire logo

Lutherans Concerned/North America invites people of all sexual orientations and gender identities to assemble with members of Reconciling in Christ and prospective RIC congregations at San Francisco State University July 3-6 under the theme, Hearts on Fire.

We’ll worship together, using a rich variety of traditions of the worshipping community. We’ll provide a blend of the familiar and the unique drawing on our Lutheran heritage and the wealth of liturgical practice in the area. We’ll network with one another, hear stories of joy and frustration, and make decisions together about the future direction of Lutherans Concerned/North America.

Hearts on Fire. is more than a conference. We take pride in nurturing our participants. Many see the biennial assembly as a family reunion. In 2008, we hope to expand that family feeling by offering some new and exciting aspects to the assembly. Assembly Pre-Events offer extra education and edification before the assembly begins. Vacation Bible School will be offered for children of Assembly attendees and local RIC congregations. This will allow children to have a meaningful Assembly experience along with parents. Keynote Speakers include the Rt. Rev. Gene Robinson, Episcopal Bishop of New Hampshire.

Information and Registration are at http://www.lcna.org/assembly/ This event is right in our backyard. We have been asked to provide many volunteers -the more the merrier. If you able to assist to any degree, please talk to the pastors. We also need to consider whether St. Francis will be a hospitality center because we are on the Muni line that goes to and from San Francisco State. Many attendees could stop at St. Francis as their beginning point for visiting the Castro community.

ST VINCENT DEPAUL COMMITTEE SURVEYS

We are in the process of doing a survey to find out which congregation members need help and which members can give help. So far, we only have approximately 1/3 returns on the survey.

Please take a few minutes to fill out a survey today during coffee hour or a few minutes on line to answer the questions coming to you from Stephen Lawson. Thanks to all who have returned their surveys and to those who are able to offer others help.

NEW RIC WELCOMING SYNOD IN CANADA

Lutherans Concerned/North America (LC/NA) celebrates the passage of two welcoming motions by the British Columbia Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada (ELCIC). These motions qualify the British Columbia Synod to be listed by LC/NA in our roster of Reconciling in Christ (RIC) settings of the Lutheran communion. The roster now includes 26 synods, including the Eastern Synod and British Columbia Synod of the ELCIC.

The motions which follow were passed during the British Columbia Synod Convention, April 16-20.

LUTHERAN WORLDWIDE GROWTH

The number of Lutherans in the world increased to more than 71.8 million in 2007, up from 70.2 million in 2006. The increase is attributed to a growth of 2 million members across Lutheran church bodies in Africa. Asian churches also had an increase of 100,000, while other regions showed a slight decrease. Germany has the highest number of Lutherans in the world at 12.6 million. After Germany, the largest Lutheran churches are:

The Church of Sweden (6.9 million), the Ethiopian Evangelical Church Mekane Yesus (4.9 million); the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (4.8 million) and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania (4.6 million).

Our growth also reflects the same patterns in the Anglican Communion with the same kind of problems arising over justice for women and LGBTQ people.

YOUR PASTORS CARE

If you would like one of your pastors to listen to your concerns or pain, don't hesitate to ask us -make an appointment, or ask us to call you or mark the pew card. We can be distracted at times on Sundays, so it is best to set aside another time when we can really listen. Pastors Robert and Dawn
