MAY 3rd CHOIR CONCERT

David Schofield

PALESTRINA, MISSA AETERNA CHRISTI MUNERA
and a cappella works by Tallis, Taverner, & Thompson

The St. Francis Choir in Concert

David Schofield conducts the St. Francis Choir in a concert of a capella sacred music. The program includes Palestrina's Missa Aeterna Christi Munera, one of the composers' most noted settings of the mass texts. The Mass was written for the Sistine Chapel Choir while Palestrina was singing there in the mid-sixteenth century. The Chapel was still a new structure, less than a hundred years old,

and the Sistine Choir was indisputably the finest musical ensemble in Europe. The program also includes a very varied selection of motets, ranging from English Tudor church music to American folk hymns and twentieth century composers. Admission is free. Plan to attend and invite your friends.

Organ Dedication

MAY 4TH MUSICAL LITURGY

Worship this Sunday, May 4th will begin with pre-service music at 10:30 AM. Come early and listen to the music performed by David Schofield.

The service of music will celebrate the completion of the refurbishment of the organ. There will be a dedication and the unveiling of the memorial plaque in honor of St. Francis Organists and Pastors, and in memory of loved ones designated by the contributors.David Schofield and the choir have been working on this special program and it will be an excellent service to invite friends and family to attend.

Almost $50,000 has been pledged and spent on the renovation and one can tell the major difference in the sound quality and the improvement in our musical worship experience.

Unfortunately, like with one’s car after paying for a major repair and maintenance bill at the shop only to find out a month later that some little switch buried in the transmission has gone bad, we need to make an additional repair to the organ. The electrical contacts on the console pedals are failing and already, two pedals are non-functional. The bill to replace the contacts is $1,400.00.

On May 4th, the Council and the Organ Renovation Task Force would like to ask members and friends of the congregation to make a special contribution to pay for this additional repair. Please mark your check " ‘Organ Fund".

Thank you to those that have contributed to this project, and thank you for considering this additional request. Ken Hedrick

LETTER FROM JANICE COLLINS,
SISTER OF JERRY THOMPSON

Dear Pastor Robert Goldstein I am deeply grateful for the love and support that you shared with me and my family at the passing of my brother, Jerry. To feel and be in the midst of the kind and lovely people we met at his funeral service was such a blessing. The Lord has truly been watching over him all these years in ways that we did not see being so far away. I am grateful for the respect and caring that was so visible in your presence. You truly are doing Christ’s work every day. If each of us could love one another, accept one another, be kind to one another…I know the world would be a better. St. Francis Church, you, your congregation, are a small example of trying to make the world a better place. I know you made my brother Jerry’s (and Lucy’s) life a little better. I thank you for that.

May you all be blessed as you have blessed our family. Janice Collins

Hearts on Fire Conference
Hearts on Fire logo

Lutherans Concerned/North America invites people of all sexual orientations and gender identities to assemble with members of Reconciling in Christ and prospective RIC congregations at San Francisco State University July 3-6 under the theme, Hearts on Fire.

We’ll worship together, using a rich variety of traditions of the worshipping community. We’ll provide a blend of the familiar and the unique drawing on our Lutheran heritage and the wealth of liturgical practice in the area. We’ll network with one another, hear stories of joy and frustration, and make decisions together about the future direction of Lutherans Concerned/North America.

Hearts on Fire. is more than a conference. We take pride in nurturing our participants. Many see the biennial assembly as a family reunion. In 2008, we hope to expand that family feeling by offering some new and exciting aspects to the assembly. Assembly Pre-Events offer extra education and edification before the assembly begins. Vacation Bible School will be offered for children of Assembly attendees and local RIC congregations. This will allow children to have a meaningful Assembly experience along with parents. Keynote Speakers include the Rt. Rev. Gene Robinson, Episcopal Bishop of New Hampshire.

Information and Registration are at http://www.lcna.org/assembly/ This event is right in our backyard. We have been asked to provide many volunteers -the more the merrier. If you able to assist to any degree, please talk to the pastors. We also need to consider whether St. Francis will be a hospitality center because we are on the Muni line that goes to and from San Francisco State. Many attendees could stop at St. Francis as their beginning point for visiting the Castro community.

A CANADIAN ORDINATION

Lional Ketola

The people of Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Newmarket, Ontario, Canada have issued a call to Lionel Ketola to serve as Associate Pastor. This call is in violation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada’s (ELCIC) discriminatory policy of excluding "self-declared and practicing homosexuals" from the office of ordained ministry.

Called as an Associate Pastor, Lionel will be deployed as an Ambassador of Reconciliation (2 Corinthians 5:16 - 21)

within the Eastern Synod and beyond to the ELCIC. As an Ambassador of Reconciliation, Lionel will work to promote the full inclusion of lesbian, bisexual, gay and trans-gendered people in the life of the ELCIC. Lionel will be ordained extra ordinem on Friday May 16th at 7:30 PM at Trinity United Church in Newmarket.

Your St. Francis Foundation contributed funds for Lionel’s internship at the Ontario congregation.

PRESBYTERIANS ADVANCE!

Tiburon, CA - The Presbyterian's General Assembly Permanent Judicial Commission (GAPJC) reversed the two-year-old Synod decision to censure Rev. Dr. Jane Adams Spahr for her role in marrying same-gender couples. Today's decision held that the Presbyterian constitution contains no prohibition against marrying same-gender couples.

LUTHERANS & METHODISTS

FORT WORTH, Texas (ELCA) -- By a vote of 864-19, the General Conference of the United Methodist Church (UMC) adopted an implementing resolution April 28 that will establish full communion with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). Full communion will be fully realized by both churches should the same proposal be adopted at the next ELCA Churchwide Assembly, which meets Aug. 17-23, 2009, in Minneapolis.

The ELCA and UMC have been in formal theological dialogue since 1977,

which led to beginning a relationship of "Interim Eucharistic Sharing" in 2005. That relationship called for members to pray for and support each other, to study Scripture together and to learn about each other's traditions in anticipation of achieving full communion.

The ELCA's five full communion partners are the Episcopal Church, the Moravian Church in America, Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), Reformed Church in America and United Church of Christ.

ADULT FORUM

Adult Forum is currently reading La Vida Sacra. This book is about Hispanic religion and liturgy and how we can begin to understand its many gifts to enhance our life and worship as Christians.

Join us on Sundays at 9:30 AM in the Conference Room.

YOUR PASTORS CARE

If you would like one of your pastors to listen to your concerns or pain, don't hesitate to ask us -make an appointment, or ask us to call you or mark the pew card. We can be distracted at times on Sundays, so it is best to set aside another time when we can really listen. Pastors Robert and Dawn
