Your input is welcomed; if you attended but did not take the opportunity to speak, or if you were unable to attend, please share your thoughts with a council member of the pastors, or send email to jkowalski@pacbell.net.

JERRY THOMPSON REMEMBERED

Services for Jerry Thompson, St. Francis’ "Elvis," were conducted last Tuesday evening. Jerry’s partner Bob and Jerry’s mother, from Grand Rapids, MI and brother and sister from Southern California were present with friends from both the congregation and the community.

Blessed are they who die in Christ Jesus.

A LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Richard Copperud writes:

It’s that time of the year. You may be one of those who have over-paid state or federal income tax and are due a legitimate refund. Congratulations! Now give some consideration: this money in most cases is (sort of) a windfall; a nice dinner out; a little extra vacation; a fun evening out; lots of "specials"! But consider a special tithe to our church. Think about your regular tithe - 5%, 10%- how about an additional 1, 2 or 3% of this "extra" income? Or maybe a special gift to the music, senior or Sunday school, or any of the other programs we support. It’s your choice. When you bring in your regular Sunday offering, bring the actual refund check and print "pay to the order of" St. Francis Lutheran Church, and mark your check or envelope how it should be credited.

POLISH SOLIDARITY UPDATE

St. Francis member Michael Petrelis’ efforts (see his webpage at http://mpetrelis.blogspot.com/) to mount opposition to the homophobic Polish Prime Minister are working. A Polish TV station paid for the American gay couple, whose marriage the Polish Prime Minister attacked, to fly to Poland giving them a platform for showing a positive picture of LGBTQ people.

600 Polish intellectuals publicly apologized Friday to the couple for the anti-gay propaganda of Polish President Lech Kaczynski. Kaczynski in a TV speech warned against gay rights as enshrined in the European Union's Charter of Fundamental Rights because they could undermine Catholic morals and strengthen the rights of displaced ethnic Germans.

NEW MEMBER BRUNCH

Next Sunday, April 13 is the new member brunch to introduce the fall 2007 new members to the congregation! This festive, annual gathering is for every member and all visitors attending worship that Sunday following the service.

Help the People of Tibet

San Francisco is the only city in the United States that will be hosting the Olympic torch on its journey around the world prior to the Olympics to be held this August in Beijing. The Tibetan community of the Bay Area will be joining other communities to protest on April 8th and 9th in San Francisco, and today we are respectfully seeking your help in one of two ways:

Please join us on April 8th and 9th in San Francisco to speak out against oppression and for human rights in the world. Please consider housing a Tibetan activist or supporter coming to the Bay Area to make their voices heard. We are expecting several hundred, if not thousands, of people and are in urgent need of housing for them. We truly appreciate your consideration in this matter and in closing would like to quote the wisdom of Martin Luther King, Jr.:

Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.

Please contact the undersigned if you are able to help us in housing our visiting concerned brothers and sisters.

With deep gratitude,
Bonnie McCalla, Former president
Bay Area Friends of Tibet,

SAVE THE DATE: MAY 4 WORSHIP

Worship on Sunday, May 4th will be a service of music celebrating the completion of the refurbishment of the organ. There will be a dedication and the unveiling of the memorial plaque in honor of contributors, musicians and pastors of St. Francis.

ADULT FORUM

Adult Forum is currently reading La Vida Sacra. This book is about Hispanic religion and liturgy and how we can begin to understand its many gifts to enhance our life and worship as Christians.

Join us on Sundays at 9:30 AM in the Conference Room.

YOUR PASTORS CARE

If you would like one of your pastors to listen to your concerns or pain, don't hesitate to ask us -make an appointment, or ask us to call you or mark the pew card. We can be distracted at times on Sundays, so it is best to set aside another time when we can really listen. Pastors Robert and Dawn

Hearts on Fire Conference
Hearts on Fire logo

Lutherans Concerned/North America invites people of all sexual orientations and gender identities to assemble with members of Reconciling in Christ and prospective RIC congregations at San Francisco State University July 3-6 under the theme, Hearts on Fire.

We’ll worship together, using a rich variety of traditions of the worshipping community. We’ll provide a blend of the familiar and the unique drawing on our Lutheran heritage and the wealth of liturgical practice in the area. We’ll network with one another, hear stories of joy and frustration, and make decisions together about the future direction of Lutherans Concerned/North America.

Hearts on Fire. is more than a conference. We take pride in nurturing our participants. Many see the biennial assembly as a family reunion. In 2008, we hope to expand that family feeling by offering some new and exciting aspects to the assembly. Assembly Pre-Events offer extra education and edification before the assembly begins. Vacation Bible School will be offered for children of Assembly attendees and local RIC congregations. This will allow children to have a meaningful Assembly experience along with parents. Keynote Speakers include the Rt. Rev. Gene Robinson, Episcopal Bishop of New Hampshire.

Information and Registration are at http://www.lcna.org/assembly/ This event is right in our backyard. We have been asked to provide many volunteers -the more the merrier. If you able to assist to any degree, please talk to the pastors. We also need to consider whether St. Francis will be a hospitality center because we are on the Muni line that goes to and from San Francisco State. Many attendees could stop at St. Francis as their beginning point for visiting the Castro community.
