HISTORIC PHOTOGRAPHS DISCOVERED

1906 photograph

Our thanks to Mike Callahan who collects vintage photos of San Francisco. Mike discovered the church (in highlighted circle above word "church") in this dramatic photo of the Great Earthquake and Fire of 1906. The fire is advancing toward Market and Dolores (see close-up below which reveals a very undeveloped south side of Mint Hill where the Safeway now is.)

closeup photograph

Dolores St photograph

Here is a photo looking down Dolores Street at Market showing the devastation that appears to indicate that this part of the fire was stopped at Dolores and Market (the buildings on the west side of the intersection look intact). For readers worldwide the great destruction was the result of the fire rather than the earthquake since water mains were broken. One fire hydrant on Church St. and 20th St. was found to work and to this day it is painted gold for its gift to the beleaguered firefighters. As the previous photos show St. Francis Church came very close to destruction, but having survived both the earthquake and fire, the church was put to use as a feeding and medical station by the US Navy. In our time 101 years later we are asking now for members and friends of St. Francis who would like to be a part of the city’s emergency response team at St. Francis to contact Pastor Robert. If St. Francis is still standing after the next earthquake or a terrorist attack, people will come to us for help and reassurance. We need to be ready. Will you help us get ready?

STORIES TO TELL! GIFTS TO SHARE!

"Stories to tell! Gifts to share! " is our theme for St. Francis for 2007-2008. Stewardship at St. Francis is becoming much more than just a two-month pledge program - it will include year-round experiences and activities, such as discussions on faith practices, devotions, sharing our personal stories, supporting the development of the Diaconate Program and encouraging worship.

Beginning at worship on Sunday, September 9, and continuing throughout the year, we will hear one of our own tell their story of being involved at St. Francis and why being part of this congregation’s ministry is so important to that person. You will also be invited to share your story of participation in and connection to the life of our congregation one-on-one with a member of the Stewardship Committee, and, if you like, with the entire congregation.

Please contact any of the members of the committee if you have any questions: Jim Asp, Grant Burger, Bruce Jervis, Paul Johnson, Jim Kowalksi, Nancy Loewe, Brandee Marckmann, Susan Tucerri, Pr. Robert Goldstein and Pr. Dawn Roginski.

BRING YOUR CALENDER

After service today during coffee hour, you can sign up on the Worship Assistant list in the Parish Hall.

SUNDAY SCHOOL COMING SOON!!

We are planning to start a Sunday school this fall. We need some help purchasing kid-friendly furniture for the room. Please consider making a special donation so we can have a good looking room. Also, if you are in a store selling school supplies, we could use washable markers, colored pencils, child scissors and glue sticks. Just bring them with you to church and give them to Pr. Dawn. Thanks for your willingness to help.

SUNDAY CLASS

We are reading Bishop John Spong’s latest book, Jesus for the Non Religious. As usual for Bishop Spong, this too is a controversial and provocative book. Please join us for an animated discussion about our faith in the 21st Century in San Francisco. Pastor Robert

SARAH HALL SENDS GREETINGS

"Thank you for keeping me in your thoughts and prayers these past months. I am well, and finally settled in Portland. My health is good, and the new environmental job with Wells Fargo interesting. I love being closer to my brother’s family. The only think missing - is you! I miss and love you. Blessings." Sarah
