ST FRANCIS & SFSU GEOGRAPHERS RAISE $40,471 AT AIDS WALK

45 Lutherans and friends with 26 Geographers and their partners participated through fund- raising, walking last week, or both. For the first time, both the geographers and Lutherans had similar team t-shirts, the fabulous tie-dyes. The day at the Golden Gate Park began in the wet fog, but dried out by the barbeque at end of the walk.
We reported raising $40,471 this year, compared to $47,522 last year. However, contributions can still be given through August 10th, so keep on trucking, gang.

Lots of people need to be thanked: Clifton King, for making coffee early at church; Timur, Lawrence and Carl for transporting our placards, food and t-shirts to the park at 7 AM; to all who helped organize the pre-walk goodies, and the post-walk clean up, especially Babs Kling; to Iris Vaughan for collecting the statistics on collections; and Michael and Tania Beaudet for donating time and refreshments for our post-walk barbeque.

I would like to hear from the following registered team members for whom I have no data. Please see me in church or leave a message on my phone. These persons are: Bob Bolton, Paul Brenner, Patrick Brown, Grant Burger, Nancy Burns, Rob Byrne, Greg Egertson, Nancy Ewert, Rachel Hoobing, Brad Hubert, Susan Hutchison, the Knutsons, Susan Kools, Adam Maass, Michael Mallory, Brandee Marckmann, Rachel Markel, Roy Martinez, Richard Penrose, Nancy Record, Alex Spehr, Jeffrey Tripp, Valerie Wagner, Sarah Wells, and Marsha White.

Please let me know the progress made on contributions so I can update the team totals. I am also willing to collect the sponsor sheet and contributions collected.

Thanks to all who participated this year!

SOCIAL JUSTICE MEETING

The Social Justice meeting held on July 12th was short and productive. We decided to participate in the August 4th Global Gay Solidarity Day demonstration to be held in San Francisco 12 noon at the Flood Building, 870 Market Street. We plan to be there for an hour. All are invited to come for as long as you can stay, and bring interested friends, too.

Our future actions include sending letter to embassies in Washington D.C., asking that the human rights of LGBT people be protected. For more information on the committee, please see Michael Petrelis during coffee hour after service.
Social Justice Team
Saturday, Aug 4 is Global Gay Solidarity Day. Join us at noon at the Flood Bldg, 870 Market St. for a demonstration against 7 foreign consulates of countries that discriminate and oppress LGBT people. Be part of this call for justice and raising public awareness.

GALA PLANNING MEETING

On August 5th, following service at 12:30 PM there will be meeting to plan for the fall GALA. Help in many areas is needed so that there can be a successful GALA and achieve our ministry goals as planned in our Vision & Mission Statement. Please contact me if you are interested or would like to be included but are not able to attend this meeting. Jim Kowalski, Council Liaison

THANKS FOR THE PIANO

Following the requests for the donation of a piano for the Parish Hall, Devin Grant came to the rescue. He donated his Spinet piano so that the Seniors would have a good instrument for their sing-alongs and other piano concerts. Thanks goes to Richard Copperud who funded the cost of moving the piano to the church.

We still need a cover and moving dolly. A cover costs about $200.00, and the dolly is $500.00. Since these expenses were not budgeted, donations for these items are being requested. Those that can contribute toward the cover and dolly should mark an envelope or check for "Piano".

WHY IS OUR FOOD BASKET EMPTY?

Many of us seem to have forgotten about our food basket which sits empty in the back of the sanctuary across the aisle from the baptismal font. The basket was originally intended to be a component of our weekly offering. All of the food that is collected is donated to the San Francisco Food Bank to help feed the 1 in 5 San Franciscans who face hunger each day.
basket

Urgently needed items include: canned vegetables, canned fruit, tuna, canned meats, soups, stews and chili, peanut butter and cereal (no glass containers or perishable food, please).

Bring your food offering to church on Sunday mornings and leave it in the basket as you enter the sanctuary.

152 is St. Francis' street address. This column will have articles of special note from time to time.

SUNDAY CLASS

We are reading Bishop John Spong’s latest book, Jesus for the Non Religious. As usual for Bishop Spong, this too is a controversial and provocative book. Please join us for an animated discussion about our faith in the 21st Century in San Francisco. Pastor Robert
