STILL MORE ELCA SYNODS VOTE FOR LGBT JUSTICE
From Phil Soucy, LC/NA Communications
The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) is composed of 65 synods all of which have annual synod assemblies before the ELCA Churchwide Assembly in Chicago August 4-11. 58 synod assemblies have met so far. We have confirmed that 41 of these synods voted on resolutions that called for ending the policy precluding clergy who are in committed same-gender relationships. Of these 41 synods, 23 have called for full inclusion (one voted such last year), while only 10 have called for continuation of the current policy of exclusion. Seven synod assemblies remain (through June 24).
SUNDAY CLASS
We are reading Diana Bass' Christianity For the Rest of Us, a real alternative to the religious right and a model with which to test St. Francis' vision.
In a couple of weeks, we will begin discussing Bishop John Spong's latest book, Jesus for the Non Religious. This is an explosive book. Pastor Robert
FIFTH SUNDAY FORUM
The next fifth Sunday, July 29th, will be our first Fifth Sunday Forum and it will combine the coffee hour with an open forum of Council and Congregation on our worship life. Another Fifth Sunday Forum is planned for September 30th as an open forum on our Property.
AIDS WALK UPDATE
It’s been a week since I 'wrote'. We have registered two more walkers thanks to Keith Skelly & Bob James. This is good and is how it is supposed to work: you engage in friendly conversation with friends, and then you invite them to join the team.
I checked our team on-line donations and we are up only $100.00 more. I was all set to gently chastise you for not sending out your email solicitations, and then I remembered I haven’t done anything yet either. Ok - so no whining on my part. But let’s all resolve to start on acquiring sponsors. Now. This week. For sure.
Of immediate concern is the upcoming tie dye party. I’ve seen the new tie dye t-shirts done for this year’s Pride Parade, and I can honestly say they are spectacular - 1000% better than my shirt from last year. If you can get a white t-shirt to the church by this Tuesday evening, we will tie dye it for you.
Finally, we need volunteers to help with the actual tie dyeing. We will do it in the Parish Hall Tuesday, June 19th, from 7 to 8 PM. If you can help, let me know.
