ROWAN SMITH OF CAPE TOWN CATHEDRAL TO BRING GREETINGS FROM PIETER OBERHOLZER


Please welcome the Very Rev. Rowan Smith to St. Francis on Sunday, March 18. Dean Smith is also on the Board of Inclusive and Affirming Ministries in Cape Town, South Africa, the organization directed by our Missionary, the Rev. Pieter Oberholzer and supported by St. Francis. He officiated at Pieter and Fanie’s wedding several years ago.

Dean Smith was ordained in 1968 and served in several South African parishes. In 1989, he was formally released from his vows and returned to Cape Town to become Chaplain at the University of Cape Town, Chaplain to Archbishop Desmond Tutu and then, Provincial Executive Officer for the Church of the Province of Southern Africa. He became Dean of Cape Town in October 1996. He has served as Trustee on the Desmond Tutu Educational Trust as well as the Peace Foundation.

Rowan is actively involved in advocacy for the gay and lesbian community and seeking to articulate the spirituality of the LGBT community, as well as issues around HIV and AIDS, and abuse of women and children.

After a warm welcome to Dawn Roginski last Sunday in worship followed by a thought-ful question and answer session the next step is a Congregational Meeting next Sunday, March 25 following worship at which the resolution to extend a Call to Dawn to be Pastor of Parish Programs will be read and voted upon.

Joint Lenten Services

St. Francis Lutheran Church and the Metropolitan Community Church join this Lenten season on Wednesday evenings for a Taizé service. This service, a product of the monastic community near Burgundy, France, uses silence, light and meditation through music and prayer. In the service, the leader says a prayer, then the congregation sings a response, holding the last note while the leader speaks the next prayer.

CONSIDER JOINING THE GOOD FRIDAY WALK

St. Francis joins Most Holy Redeemer Roman Catholic and St. John the Evangelist Episcopal in our second Stations of the Cross Procession through the streets of San Francisco on Good Friday, April 6 at Noon till 2 PM.
If you cannot handle the walk there will also be the Stations of the Cross at noon inside St. Francis.

EASTER LILIES

Lilly plants will be arranged in the sanctuary for Easter Sunday, April 8th. Anyone interested in furnishing one or more plants should make arrangements with Dave Walda at the office to drop them off by Friday, April 6th.

Unfortunely, this batch was not scored so they could be easily torn apart. Please drop the whole card, or the lower portion if you can separate the parts, in the offering plate or hand it to an usher.




Rummage Sale

WELCOME MINISTRY RUMMAGE SALE

The Welcome Ministry will be having a rummage sale on Saturday, March 24th at Old First Presbyterian Church 10am-2pm. The proceeds will be used to get a new commercial dishwasher for our kitchen.

If you have items you would like to bring to the Welcome Ministry please bring them to Old First Presbyterian (Van Ness and Sacramento) the week prior to the event. If you are coming after 5pm or before 11am on a week day please let us know so we can make sure to meet you at the church to let you in and help you unload.
